A solar energy system isn't just one product — it's a team of components working together. Understanding what each part does helps you make better purchasing decisions and spot quality issues early.
Solar Panels: Capturing Sunlight
Solar panels (also called PV modules) convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity. The two main types are monocrystalline (higher efficiency, dark color) and polycrystalline (slightly lower efficiency, blue color). For Ethiopian conditions, monocrystalline panels are recommended due to their superior performance at high temperatures.
Charge Controllers: The Traffic Manager
The charge controller sits between the panels and batteries. It regulates the voltage and current flowing into the battery, preventing overcharging and extending battery life. MPPT controllers are more efficient than PWM controllers, especially with larger systems.
Batteries: Storing Energy
Batteries store the electricity generated during the day for use at night or during cloudy periods. Lead-acid batteries are cheaper upfront but have shorter lifespans. Lithium-ion (LiFePO4) batteries cost more but last 3–5 times longer and handle deep discharges better.
Inverters: Converting Power
Inverters convert the DC electricity from panels and batteries into AC electricity that your appliances use. Pure sine wave inverters provide clean power suitable for all appliances, while modified sine wave inverters are cheaper but can cause issues with sensitive electronics.
